All is not well in Chthonic City, Maine. People are anxious, sleepless. Road rage is on the rise, and the ERs overflow with domestic and workplace violence. Why? Because the citizens of Chthonic City are having recurring, terrifying nightmares about demons rising to walk among them, and they’re snapping.

In fact, demons ARE rising. Slowly. One at a time, to dwell unnoticed among us as they multiply our misery. And they’re rising in Chthonic City where the veil between the Chthonic (the Underworld for which the City was named, though the meaning of the word has been long forgotten) and earthly reality is very thin.

Demons cannot rise until a human soul is driven mad. Over the millennia, demons have crossed as they could, but never before has humanity been so stressed as it is now in the Western world. Never before have we been so starved for time, touch, meaning, purpose. Never have our circuits been so overloaded with gloom and doom, economically, environmentally, spiritually. Never before have the demons had such a vulnerable population. Scenting a chance to break free in numbers, they hurl themselves into our dreams, battering at our sanity.

But these demons are not unopposed. In a crumbling church on the edge of town, an ancient Guardian has been watching and waiting. When the threat from the Underworld surges, the Guardian's job is to send out a call to a fresh crop – a cell – of Gatekeepers, and train them to descend into the Chthonic through the dream state and do battle with the demons, slaying them there before they can cross the threshold.

In Chthonic City, a new cell of Gatekeepers – teenagers all – has just been summoned....

As I read The Summoning, I couldn't help but compare it to the other paranormal YA I've recently read. Or rather, I should say, the other paranormal I tried to read. Twice. Shadow Grail, by Mercedes Lackey, who is one of my all time favorite authors. Unlike the disappointing Shadow Grail, this book wasn't boring and had characters I could like and root for. The authors were clever enough to insert the first chapter of the next book, which I read, and of course I want that book NOW! Write fast, Ladies!

The Summoning The Gatekeeper Series Book 1 eBook Norah Wilson Heather Doherty Reviews

This book starts with an introduction to a mysterious guardian protecting an ancient secret. The Pandora in the Box is about to be freed on the unsuspecting world unless stopped. Four Teenagers are called to be the present day heroes and heroines, the present day warriors to fight the dark forces. They are called to go into the bowels of Hell and faced horrors unmentionable to prevent the head demon and his minions from escaping and bring havoc to the earthly realm. The intrigue of the plot, the bonding of total opposite characters, teenagers make this story worth reading to the conclusion. It is more then a good against evil battle tale, it is a fight to the end and the the question is who will win? The thrills of coming closer to victory or defeat keeps the reader compelled to complete this entertaining story. It is written to lure the reader to personally become attached to one or more of the characters as they struggle through their fears of the unknown and learn to become masters of their own destiny as they are assigned to saved humanity from being taken hostage by vile forces.
In the author's own words, "They all knew. And they were all scared now, no matter the fronts they put on. But too, the Guardian Knew, each of them could only realize that they now were not alone. Finally not alone in the horrors that they saw".

The witty and serious tones of this YA paranormal story stimulates the brain neurons and leaves the reader breathless at the final page. This tale makes it so that being introduced to these writers' creativity on paper and ebook is a gift to be shared.

Also knowing that there are more treasures like these coming in the near future, keeps the heart racing and provides entertainment to look forward too. One could recommend for this book to be a conversational piece if they are interested in the supernatural, and hold a lively debate about predictions and consequences of desicions one makes to balance the scales of good vs. evil. This is a masterpiece to be stored in your personal library and brought out on a scary thunderstorm night, or to be enjoyed in the brght sunlight.
Do nightmares keep you up at night? Do humans look like demons? Voices? People stop and stare? Are you overly popular and you can't seem to figure out why? Perhaps, you are just an outsider looking in, or maybe one who just wants to be part of a crowd. If any of these things are happening to you, it is possible you have been summoned by the Guardian and you should take notice because demons want to take over the land. Welcome to Chthonic City where a handful of teenagers have become restless, anxious, and a little freaked out over what they are seeing. Who to tell? No one. They can't tell. Who would believe them? Each high school student faced with demonic sites and nightmares has life in which no one knows. The crazy girl sent to a psych ward, the jock, the loner, and the one not called at all. These students have a purpose. They may not realize just how important they are. The book goes on to tell the story of four teens, summoned by another world. The group meets the Guardian who teaches them that together, they can "dream down" and stop the demons coming through the gates of hell. In the process, a fifth follows and although is not called, desperately wants to join. Claire, Janna, Darren, Galen, and Maxim each see the demons in a different way. Each one of the teens holding on to different sense of "power" and called for a purpose. Each called forth to be Gatekeepers. All except for one. Each teen has its own story. Each teen is being neglected by family, most without friends to speak of. Parents too rich to take notice of the child's thoughts and feelings. Parents who are work-a-holics. Each lonely in their own way. They needed each other more than they knew. Even though the whole dream thing was played out with Nightmare on Elm Street it is refreshing to see a new twist on it. I recommend The Summoning for readers of young adult novels to adults. Some of it might be a bit harsh for the sensitive younger readers, so it may be better suited for those age 17 and above due to some events and profanity. It is a story of good vs. evil. It is a story of teens from opposite sides of the track bonding together to form a bond. A bond which would not be broken. So, while some will read the story and follow the teens down the gates of hell to fight the demons trying to cross over, others will see a deeper meaning of friendship and understanding. Were they able to close the door and stop the demons? You will just have to read the novel to find out! I am anxious to see what turn of events happen in upcoming books. This is one series I will be keeping an eye on.
